Poem: Soft

SOFT

I am too soft for the world.
Lacking lies,
Devoid of disguise
To escape the truth
That I simply don’t care
About an eye for an eye
Or a tooth for a tooth.

When the cheek turns easily,
Is it cowardice or morality?
I had the one before the other,
Before my brother, before my lover,
Before I was born
Even then I was torn
Between love for love’s sake,
Between heart and heartache.

The snake eats mice
Without thinking twice.
If God is The Good,
He’s on very thin ice.
God might command it,
But he will abandon it.
Hoisted by his own petard,
Lowered in a gray graveyard,
A box of dust
Silent and still
In the land of the just.
