Poem: What Is Truth?

What Is Truth?

Emotions are confusing,
Neither sequential nor distinct.
They can disappear or rearrange
Before your eye can blink.

Hence, for guiding action,
Emotions are quite suspect.
A better resource, some suggest,
Is your good-old intellect.

But for asserting a proposition,
Thoughts, just like emotions,
Are frequently false or in opposition.
So much data and conflicting conclusions
Make it hard to distinguish
Cold truths from delusions.

To perceive the true and beautiful and good,
Perhaps a careful combination
Would get us in the neighborhood.
But just as two wrongs don’t make a right,
Two faulty flashlight batteries
Shed at best a feeble light.

We are ill-equipped, so it seems,
To unearth the rock of reality and
Dismiss our vague and vaporous dreams.

This is why Jesus came to town:
To set our orientation straight;
To reveal what is beyond
Us folks to feel or calculate.
