Poem: Revolt of the Components

REVOLT OF THE COMPONENTS

It began when Shelf A lost the loyalty of Shelf B,
The latter deeming their relationship unsatisfactory.
Your domination must stop.
It is not right for you forever to be on top!

A host of hex bolts heartily agreed,
Hungrily hoping at last to be freed.
Fiercely flat washers argued night and day,
Some circling the wagons around Shelf B,
With others flatly favoring Shelf A.

Soon the hinges became unhinged,
And news of screws
Refusing to cooperate
With packets of brackets
Left the Master of the Bookshelves
In a sorrowful state.

The Master, an Allen Wrench of golden hue,
Let the components do what they would do.
He assembled them in their desired configuration,
A humorously horrible haphazard abomination.
The rebellious components were thrilled to the core,
But all the books slid from the shelves to the floor.

Shelf A, two side panels, and a handful of hardware
Begged the rest to assume a shape more sound,
But alas their words fell on deaf ears
Until at last they all came tumbling down.

With sadness the Master disassembled
The still belligerent, deaf-eared components.
The hardware was tossed in a dark toolbox drawer,
The wood relegated to the basement floor.

Despite it all, there was a saving grace
That put things in their proper place.
Shelf A, two side panels, and that handful of hardware
Rested now by a leather chair,
An end table refashioned
With the Master’s care.
