THE PLACE WE WENT
The place we went
Is now a Walmart
Selling Wonder Bread
And other things
We did not need.
Three hundred miles apart,
We found the place we went halfway,
Drank Chardonnay and spread a blanket
Under ancient maple trees,
Laid back for hours counting
Their green and golden leaves.
The rutted roads were nameless
To the place we went so long ago,
How we found it
I’ll never know,
But, oh, to find it again
Would bring time to its knees
As so blessedly it did
In harder days, back then.
With daily frantic pressures
Closing in from every angle,
The place we went made for us
A free and easy peace,
Turning seconds into
Nourishing eternities.
As new eternities loom ahead,
The place we went let us see
A flickering forever, coincidentally
The very place we soon will be.
